Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian gave an update during his Monday press conference, explaining that Ewers “worked last week for three practices.”
“He practiced again today,” Sarkisian said. “I thought he looked good coming off the bye. I think if anybody benefitted from the time off, it was probably him. We’re going to monitor him daily just to kind of see how he continues to progress. But I feel good about how he was today. I feel good about him going into Saturday, but that remains to be seen.”
Would Ewers be the starter if the game was today?
“If we had to play, sure,” Sarkisian said. “But that’s why it’s important that we monitor him daily because I want to see how he responds to extended work and what that looks like to make sure that he’s as healthy as he can be to perform.”
This season, Ewers is 58-for-79 for 691 yards and eight touchdowns over two interceptions. He was 14-for-16 for 185 yards and two touchdowns along with one interception before a strained abdomen forced him to leave the Longhorns’ win over UTSA. He sat out Texas’ games against ULM and Mississippi State.

Backup quarterback Arch Manning played in Ewers’ place against UTSA, ULM, and Mississippi State. In Ewers’ stead against the Roadrunners, Manning was 9-for-12 passing for 223 yards and four touchdowns, including a 19-yard scoring toss to DeAndre Moore Jr. on his very first snap of the game. Manning tallied five total touchdowns against the Roadrunners, adding a 67-yard rushing touchdown on a zone-read keeper midway through the second quarter.
Manning earned SEC Co-Freshman of the Week accolades for his performance. It was the first time Manning had ever entered a game where the result was not totally determined. His previous appearances versus Colorado State in 2024 and against Texas Tech and Oklahoma State in 2023 were when the Longhorns had the game easily in hand.
Against ULM, Manning was 15-for-29 for 258 yards and two touchdowns along with two interceptions.
Versus Mississippi State, Manning was 26-for-31 for 325 yards and two touchdowns plus a rushing touchdown as part of the Longhorns’ 35-13 win. For the season, Manning is 55-for-78 for 901 yards and nine touchdowns along with the two interceptions. He’s also added three touchdowns on the ground.
