Rodney Terry continues to build momentum as he adds to his roster for 2023-24
After a bit of a rocky start to his tenure as head basketball coach at the University of Texas, Rodney Terry is on a roll of late, signing four high-profile – and difference-making – players from the transfer portal and welcoming back one of his best players from the 2022-23 season after a flirtation with the NBA.

Terry took some time with the media last week when the Texas Fight Tour pulled into Houston for another overflowing outpouring of support for all things burnt orange. His appearance was part of the program that featured speeches and question-and-answer sessions from several coaches as well as athletic director Chris Del Conte.
The reception for Terry and his staff since he was hired in March has been a warm and welcoming – a situation that was surely enhanced by the Longhorns run to the Elite Eight after the firing of Chris Beard.
“(The reception) has been great,” Terry said. “I mean, we’ve been on the ground running from the time that we took the job. So, I mean, we’re working on the 2024 class and headed to the ‘25 class. We’ve been recruiting those guys for a while and so (the) ’24 (class) has been very receptive in terms of recruiting those guys when I was an assistant.”
Terry was able to discuss the signing of transfers Kadin Shedrick, a forward who played four years at Virginia; Max Abmas, a guard previously at Oral Roberts; Chendall Weaver, a guard who earned freshman of the year honors last season at UT-Arlington; and Ze’Rik Onyema, a forward with three years at UTEP under his belt.

Michigan prepared to offer No. 1 recruit $10.5M over 4 years
He was not yet able to speak on the return of guard Tyrese Hunter, who decided to come back for his junior year on the 40 Acres after testing his draft stock in the runup to the NBA Draft.
Hunter, sixth-year graduate student Brock Cunningham and junior Dylan Disu return to the team after being key members of the Texas rotation last season.
Terry and his staff are busy recruiting players for next year and for the future, continuing a never-ending process of building the best team, and the best mix of players, possible.

“We’re always going to try to go out to the top players in the state and try to do our best job of recruiting him to want to come to the University of Texas,” Terry said. “And I don’t think we can have a whole team full of those guys, but, but we can sure try to find our share of guys that fit the needs. That we have for that year.”
