Shaka lands his first in Austin.
The Longhorns received the commitment of 6-foot-6 wing Tevin Mack of Columbia, SC today when Mack picked Texas over the Georgia Bulldogs, Kansas Jayhawks, and the UConn Huskies.
This is the second time Smart has secured the commitment of Mack as the ESPNU #48 recruit overall originally signed his Letter of Intent with Smart’s previous program at VCU.
Things were trending to Texas after Mack decided to take an unofficial visit to Austin two weekends ago (a trip he had to pay for out of pocket as he had already taken all five of his allotted official visits while being recruited initially).
Mack becomes the third member of the 2015 class as the Longhorns were able to hold on to the commitments of guards Eric Davis and Kerwin Roach Jr. after Rick Barnes departed to become the head coach at the University of Tennessee.
The expectation is that Mack will come to Austin at the beginning of the Summer II session on July 13.
Scouting Report
Tevin Mack is a 6-foot-6 wing scorer who saw his stock rise consistently over the past year from a borderline Top 100 prospect to a genuine Top 50 one.
A capable athlete, Mack averaged just under 30 points per game during his senior season as well as showing well during EYBL sessions and at an NBA Camp last summer.
Expect Mack to come in and compete for minutes at the 3 (SF) immediately with time as a stretch 4 in Smart’s preferred small lineups a possibility should the Longhorns not add another power forward before next season.
Here's some of his tape.
Strengths:
· Has the ability to create his own shot off the dribble in one-on-one situations
· Can shoot, consistently, out to 24 feet
· Equally comfortable shooting off the catch or off the bounce
· Reads the floor well as a weakside player
· Has been schooled well as the ball handler in screen action
· Rebounds well in his area
· Good passer in the open floor
Weaknesses:
· Lateral quickness is average to below average for his size
· Will struggle guarding smaller guards who can move
· Not big enough, yet, to defend at the four
· Will need to learn spacing as a screener if he plays in larger roles
What an East Coast AAU Coach said about him:
“It’s not so much that (Tevin’s) a perfect fit for (Texas coach Shaka Smart’s) system as it is that he’s just really good at his length. He can hit with range beyond the three point line. He has a scorer’s mentality and has put up big numbers in big settings. He’s got a great attitude and is liked both by guys on his team and not. Tevin will come in ready to go, offensively. And if he gets his body right, the sky’s the limit.”
