Texas has hired James Madison assistant special teams coach Matt Moran for a similar role in Austin, Inside Texas has learned. Moran has over a decade of special teams coaching experience, including several years at the Power Four level.

Much of his prior work has been with specialists, so it’s likely Moran taking the spot vacated by current App State special teams coordinator and former Texas senior special teams analyst Jeff Crosby.

Prior to JMU, Moran spent time at Boston College, Stanford, Rutgers, and Albright College (Pa.). He has a bachelor’s in philosophy from Bowdoin College and attended the Master of Liberal Arts graduate program at Stanford.

One FBS source said of Moran, “On point scheme-wise. Really smart. Punt is his baby, I believe. JMU has always had good specs.”

JMU was No. 11 in blocked kicks, No. 20 in blocked punts, and No. 16 in kickoff returns in 2024. The Dukes finished No. 52 in special teams SP+ and No. 55 in special teams FEI. James Madison finished the season 9-4 with a win over Western Kentucky in the Boca Raton Bowl.

Moran was with Boston College in 2023 as a special teams analyst and specialists coach. The Eagles’ field goal percentage jumped from 57% to 83% under Moran’s watch.

Before his time in Chestnut Hill, Moran was at Stanford for eight seasons as a special teams graduate assistant. He worked with former Longhorn punter Ryan Sanborn during his time on the Farm.

Moran was a defensive quality control coach with Rutgers prior to Stanford. With Albright College, a Division III school near Philadelphia, his units blocked nine kicks and he produced an All-American special teamer.

Moran played multiple positions for Bowdoin, a Division III school in Brunswick, Maine.
