St. John’s transfer guard Simeon Wilcher has committed to the Texas Longhorns and Sean Miller. The 6-foot-4, 180-pound incoming junior has two years of eligibility remaining and is expected to use them, as he is not currently viewed as an NBA prospect. Last season, he averaged 8.0 points, 1.9 rebounds, and 1.4 assists with a true shooting rate of 48.5% while starting 25 of the 36 games in which he played.

Wilcher is an off-guard that is most efficient when scoring at the rim, where he takes about a third of his shots and finishes at a 60% clip. Described as a great culture piece and a player that St. John’s head coach Rick Pitino wanted to retain, Wilcher will be able to play multiple years with Texas should he decide to do so, sharing this attribute with other transfers like Matas Vokietaitis and Cam Heide. It is clear that Miller wants to create roster continuity between seasons, evident in his portal targets.

In the interest of full disclosure, Wilcher is a bit of a project. He is a good athlete that can get into the lane and score through contact, but his offensive game is somewhat limited outside of that. He is an above-average midrange scorer, but three-point shooting has been a problem for him, as he connected on just 29% of his shots from beyond the arc this past season (3.1 attempts per game). It will be interesting to see how Miller uses his skillset in an offense that emphasizes outside shooting over non-rim attempts inside the arc.

Defensively, Wilcher improved significantly from his freshman to his sophomore season, though he is not considered an elite perimeter defender at this point in time. He will not be playable with other non-shooters like Dailyn Swain or Chendall Weaver, likely serving as a 7th- or 8th-man, a bench guard that can come in and provide a spark attacking the basket as a slasher.

Despite his flaws, he does provide a much-needed ability to navigate through traffic on a live dribble. He will be just the fourth guard on the roster so far alongside Tramon Mark, Jordan Pope, and the aforementioned Weaver, all of whom are returners from last season.

Wilcher may not stuff the stat sheet, but his skillset is more important at this point than his past production.
