The long-awaited revival of the storied Texas-Texas A&M rivalry is finally here, and Aggies head coach Mike Elko couldn’t be more eager for the November 30th showdown. “This game was always going to mean something,” Elko said. “You guys have been asking me about it since the day I got hired, and now it means everything. We have that opportunity to right the last two wrongs in SEC play (road losses to South Carolina and Auburn) and go out with a bang and put ourselves in the SEC Championship Game. That’s the focus, that’s the task at hand. Obviously, we’re excited and ready for the challenge.”
The Rivalry Runs Deep
For Elko, the significance of the rivalry goes beyond the immediate stakes of the season. It’s a game that resonates across the entire state of Texas.
“I think when you grow up in this state and go through the ringers of recruiting and all that stuff, you understand what these two schools are all about and what they mean to each other,” Elko said. “Obviously, we’ve talked about this with other games too, and this one is magnified to the hilt because alumni play a role in it, too, and all of that.”
The game’s intensity is heightened by the proximity of the two programs and the personal connections between players who grew up competing against each other.
“When you talk about proximity to school, knowing the people on each side of it, that always adds to the rivalry,” Elko added. “All the Texas kids playing in this game and against each other—it always adds a different element. Then we try to educate them on what it means and what it’s all about.”
“The Best Environment in College Football”
When asked about the atmosphere expected at Kyle Field on Saturday night, Elko didn’t hesitate to proclaim its supremacy.
“With Kyle Field being one of the better environments in college football, what are you…” a reporter began, before Elko cut in.
“The best environment in college football,” Elko interjected.
The stakes and rivalry only enhance the already electric game-day experience at Kyle Field. Elko expressed his belief that the atmosphere for this game could set a new standard. What are his expectations for Kyle Field for this game?
“The best it’s ever been,” Elko predicted. “Listen, you get a primetime TV game against your rival in a game that is for the SEC Championship. I would imagine that will break the rafters a little bit. I would imagine attendance will be really large. I know ticket pull was really large. There will be a lot of excitement and electricity in the air for sure on Saturday night.”

A Rivalry Restored
The rivalry between Texas and Texas A&M, which dates back to 1894, was put on pause after the Aggies left the Big 12 for the SEC in 2012. For over a decade, fans, alumni, and players alike have awaited the return of this iconic matchup. For Elko, the renewed rivalry feels like a natural fit.
“When you have two programs as large as these two programs are, as close to each other as they are, it doesn’t make a ton of sense for them not to play,” he said. “So it always felt weird not playing. Now to be playing and to be playing for what we’re playing for, I’d imagine it will be pretty electric Saturday.”
Take it from Elko on the importance of proximity. He previously worked at Duke and played North Carolina every year.
High Stakes and High Emotions
While the rivalry brings an undeniable emotional component, Elko’s focus is squarely on the task at hand: securing a win that would propel Texas A&M to the SEC Championship Game. With two SEC losses already this season, the Aggies have no room for error.
“We have that opportunity to right the last two wrongs in SEC play and go out with a bang,” Elko said. “That’s the focus, that’s the task at hand.”
