Texas Baseball still holds SEC lead despite worst weekend in 2025

Texas had about as bad of a weekend as possible for their series against Arkansas.
Travelling to Fayetteville on a short week, the Longhorns were outscored 15-1 on Thursday and Friday to kick off the series, dropping their first series of the season in fairly uncompetitive fashion.

Needing some redemption and hoping to at least steal one game against one of the other top competitors in the SEC, Texas actually held the lead multiple times in the middle innings, with the bats of Jalin Flores, Will Gasparino and Tommy Farmer IV finally heating up for extra base hits and seven runs in the first five innings.
Still, Arkansas’ electric offense and stadium energy sustained scoring throughout the nine inning contest, sweeping the Longhorns with a 13-8 Game three.
Arkansas was tied for second place in the SEC with LSU heading into the weekend, sitting five games back from Texas at the top. LSU’s loss to Texas A&M on Saturday’s first game of a double-header dropped them to third, while Arkansas has brought the race for the SEC title within two games.
As mentioned last week, Texas entered the weekend with a magic number of five, but that number didn’t move at all thanks to that sweep. With Texas still in control of the SEC at 19-5, the Longhorns could claim the title outright with five wins in their final six games hosting Florida and at Oklahoma.

Similarly, every game Arkansas drops helps Texas inch closer to that title. Thankfully for Texas, Arkansas plays the third and fourth best teams in the SEC in their last two series, travelling to LSU next week and finishing the regular season off at home against Tennessee.
Texas’ most likely scenario would be to win both of its final series and hoping for Arkansas to drop at least one game. Texas could make it easy on themselves with five wins of their own, a reasonable expectation given that Florida sits in the bottom five of the SEC and Arkansas was Texas’ first series loss of the year.
The Longhorns won’t hold the tiebreaker over Arkansas, as head-to-head is what separates teams tied for a position in the SEC standings. They’ll need to hit that number five and be ahead of the Razorbacks by the end of the season.
Texas can no longer break any records in the SEC. Don’t blame that on us. But Jim Schlossnagle’s team still controls its destiny in the conference. Texas may not be the No. 1 team in the nation when the polls come out tomorrow, but the college baseball season is far from over.
