Davis was hired to be part of Steve Sarkisian‘s initial coaching staff in 2021. His first tenure with the Longhorns was as a member of Mack Brown‘s staff between 2011 and 2013.

During his time at Texas with Sarkisian, Davis has sent two players to the NFL draft. Moro Ojomo and Keondre Coburn were drafted in the 2023 NFL draft by the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs, respectively. Davis is likely to send two more to the draft this spring in 2023 Outland Trophy winner, unanimous All-American, and Big 12 defensive player of the year T’Vondre Sweat and Big 12 defensive lineman of the year Byron Murphy.

Sweat tallied 45 tackles including 8.0 TFL and 2.0 sacks during his standout 2023 season. Murphy has 29 tackles with 8.5 for loss and 5.0 sacks. Sweat scored an offensive touchdown in the Big 12 Championship while Murphy accounted for two scores — one versus Wyoming and another in the Sugar Bowl versus Washington.

Davis is beloved among Texas fans not just for his ability to develop defensive tackles, but also for an infamous rant following the Longhorns’ loss to Iowa State in Ames, Iowa in 2021. A leaked video from the team bus captured Davis’ profanity-laden rant about the lack of effort and focus the Longhorns displayed during the course of a 5-7 season that featured a six-game losing streak. It was seen as a turning point for the program in Sarkisian’s first year and filtered out those committed to the program from those just happy to be there.

Prior to Texas, Davis was with the Detroit Lions from 2018-2020. His last college job before leaving for the NFL was with UTSA in 2017. During his time either as an on-field assistant or on the strength and conditioning staff, Davis has won three national championships. He was an assistant strength coach for Nick Saban‘s 2003 national champion LSU Tigers. In 2009 as defensive line coach for the Crimson Tide, he helped Saban to his first national championship at Alabama. After his first stint at Texas, he returned to Tuscaloosa to help Saban win the 2015 national championship.
