Texas earning a one-seed in the SEC Tournament comes down to a coin flip

With Texas defeating Florida, and South Carolina surviving Kentucky on Sunday, the two teams finish tied for first place in the Southeastern Conference. After splitting their two head to head matchups, both teams have the same record in conference play, 15-1.

Texas and South Carolina were crowned co-champions for the SEC regular season crown, but only one team can be the first seed in the SEC Tournament.
The tiebreaker starts with the head to head record. Since the two teams each beat the other one once, it moves to record against highest ranked common conference opponents. Neither team has another conference loss, meaning they move on to the third tiebreaker—a coin flip.
Commissioner Greg Sankey will flip a coin during halftime of the LSU-Ole Miss game, which tips off at 3 p.m. One side of the coin has the Longhorns’ logo, the other the Gamecocks’. Whichever team it lands on gets the first seed in the tournament. SEC Network will televise the flip.

Regardless of how the coin flip turns out, Texas will have to play tough teams to make it far in the tournament in a strong conference like the SEC. Having all but guaranteed a one seed in the NCAA Tournament, a deep run to the SEC Championship could give the Horns the number one overall seed, and mark the end of a successful first year in the SEC.
