The Texas Longhorns, who started the regular season unranked, completed a Big 12 regular season title as D1Baseball’s No. 20 team, then entered the NCAA tournament unranked once again following a two-and-‘cue showing in the Big 12 tournament, finished the year ranked No. 14 in the outlet’s final regular season poll.

Texas was the second highest ranked Big 12 team behind No. 5 TCU, who made it all the way to last four before they were eliminated by the eventual runner-up Florida Gators. No other Big 12 teams joined the rankings.

Several teams David Pierce’s club ran into over the course of the 2023 regular season finished in the final rankings. The Arkansas Razorbacks finished in the No. 16 spot. The Vanderbilt Commodores ended the year ranked No. 19. National champion LSU ended the year No. 1 in an almost wire-to-wire campaign.

Miami, who the Longhorns defeated twice as part of their sweep through the Coral Gables regional, finished ranked No. 20. Stanford, who the Longhorns lost to in Game 3 of the Stanford super regional, finished ranked No. 4.

Two other teams on Texas’ schedule, Oklahoma State and Texas A&M, dropped out of the rankings between the beginning and end of the NCAA tournament.

This season was Pierce’s seventh as head coach of the Longhorns. He took home his third Big 12 title as the head man in Austin and reached the super regional round for the fourth time. Pierce has recorded a 40-win campaign in four of his six full seasons. Texas was 14-3 at the end of the 2020 campaign derailed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
