For 2024 Duncanville (Texas) EDGE Colin Simmons, he chose Texas over LSU, Miami, Georgia, Texas A&M, and others for a myriad of reasons. But his family was the centerpiece of the On3 No. 4 overall prospect’s process.
“Honestly, family,” Simmons told On Texas Football’s Bobby Burton and Justin Wells after his announcement ceremony on Thursday. “Family. When I had to think about, it just came down to them. What’s the best position my family can be put in? And Texas is the best position there is.”
The 6-foot-2.5, 225-pound On3 Five-Star Plus+ defender took trips across the country including Georgia, Oregon, and Ohio State. The state’s top-rated prospect made official trips to Miami on June 9-11, SMU on June 13-14, and Alabama on June 16-18 prior to his Texas official visit on June 23-25.
But being closer to his family in-state, in addition to his mother’s approval proved to be the winning recipe.
Ultimately when did Simmons know it was going to be the Longhorns?
“Yesterday,” Simmons said with a big grin. “It like came to the last day. Not that I rushed my decision, it’s just that I had to get it over with. It’s been a stressful process. I seen my mom stressed. It just came down to LSU or Texas. And you know we’ll always have love for LSU. I promise you my mom still loves Louisiana right now, to this day.”

Now Simmons gets to focus on making another run at the Texas 6A D1 state title after winning the crown last December. What’s his top priority for his final season with the Panthers.. repeating as champs?
“You already answered it,” said Simmons. “We’re about to repeat this thing. We’re going back to get another state ring.”
Simmons is ranked as the No. 4 overall prospect, the No. 1 EDGE, and the No. 1 prospect in Texas in On3’s rankings. The On3 Industry Ranking, a proprietary algorithm that compiles ratings and rankings from all four primary recruiting media services, ranks Simmons as the No. 5 overall prospect, the No. 1 EDGE, and the No. 1 player in the state of Texas.
