The countdown to kickoff is on. Inside Texas will take a look at every player on the roster ahead of the season opener versus Ohio State on August 30, checking in on every Longhorn grouped by jersey number. Up first is Nos. 99-89.

Nos. 98, 96, 95, 94, and 89 are not currently issued to a scholarship player.

99: Cole Brevard, DT

Brevard joined the Longhorns in the spring and gained positive reviews fairly quickly. He only notched 38 total tackles in his three years at Purdue following one season with Penn State, functioning as a bright spot on atrocious Boilermaker defenses. He had no issues playing at least 25 snaps in every game last year and 30 snaps in seven games, though he’ll be subjected to different weather in Austin compared to West Lafayette. Expect to see Brevard as a starter or as someone who receives starters snaps in the Longhorn DT rotation.

97: Alex January, DT

Most attention directed toward the Texas defensive tackle room went to the transfers brought in ahead of the 2025 season. But it’d be a mistake to forget about January. A player who earned snaps in meaningful games as a true freshman, January should see his snap count increase in 2025 and contend for a spot in the rotation.

93: Hero Kanu, DT

One of the transfers who went through spring drills, Kanu left Ohio State despite earning more and more opportunity on a national championship defense. He played in 15 games for the Buckeyes and even notched a tackle against the Longhorns in the Cotton Bowl. There’s some developmental meat left on the bone for Kenny Baker and company to get just right as Kanu attempts to continue and accelerate his journey from former soccer player to real deal American football player. Like January, he should be fighting for a spot in the rotation though it’s likely he’s behind the sophomore from Duncanville.

92: Colton Vasek, EDGE

Vasek has battled injury throughout his Longhorns career. That continued some into the most recent spring as Vasek was unable to be a full participant in drills because of yet another shoulder issue. It’s an unfortunate break as Vasek was in position to make a leap into regular use alongside fellow Chap Ethan Burke at the Jack position. But until he is fully healthy it’s hard to measure what Vasek’s contributions in 2025 will be.

91: Ethan Burke, EDGE

Barryn Sorrell’s sidekick last year, Burke is the first man at the Jack position in 2025 and should be able to make the most of his senior year working opposite of Colin Simmons. Burke made several important plays throughout the season, including a sack versus Clemson and, of course, the goal-line stand versus Texas A&M. He’s grown into his near 6-foot-6 frame and has the capability to rush the passer and hold up in the run game at the strongside EDGE position. Another quality season as a starter and Burke is likely on his way to a decently early selection in the 2026 draft.

90: Josiah Sharma, DT

A true freshman from Folsom (Calif.) Sharma is most likely to redshirt as he and Myron Charles develop behind notable transfer portal additions.
