The Texas school record for most players taken in one draft during the seven round era is 11, a total reached in 2024 following Texas’ Big 12 Championships and College Football Playoff semifinal appearance. This year’s draft class headlined by Kelvin Banks, Jahdae Barron, and Matthew Golden have their sights set on something higher.

The record for number of selections from one school in the seven round era belongs to Georgia, who sent 15 players into the 2022 NFL draft along with five first rounders. As many of the Longhorns vying to make their way to the league said in the aftermath of Texas’ pro timing day, that record could have company soon.

Texas had 14 players invited to the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. An invite isn’t a guarantee of a draft pick, but it’s a better indicator of a possible future selection than not receiving one. Banks, Barron, Golden, Jaydon Blue, Isaiah Bond, Vernon Broughton, Alfred Collins, Hayden Conner, Quinn Ewers, Gunnar Helm, Jake Majors, Andrew Mukuba, Barryn Sorrell, and Cameron Williams all participated in the combine, and most put on strong performances there. Plus, players like David Gbenda, Silas Bolden, Bill Norton, and Gavin Holmes posted good pro timing days in hopes that their efforts would merit a late-round pick from one of the NFL’s 32 franchises.

Banks, Barron, Golden, Collins, Broughton, Ewers, Helm, Mukuba, Blue, Sorrell, and Williams are all near locks to be picked within the draft. That would mark 11 Longhorns selected, a total that would tie the 2024 draft. Majors and Conner may be sweating day three of the draft the most, as both have either sixth or seventh round grades from The Athletic’s Dane Brugler. A few weeks ago, Bond was a sure-fire draft pick, but recent legal troubles stemming from a sexual assault allegation may have muddied those waters. Bond has vehemently denied the accusations and has filed suit in federal court against his accuser.

If teams go ahead and select Conner, Majors, and Bond, that will put the Longhorns at 14 selections, placing them in a tie for second all time with Ohio State’s 2004 draft and LSU’s 2020 draft. The Longhorns would need one more from a group featuring Gbenda, Bolden, Norton, Holmes, Morice Blackwell, Juan Davis, and Velton Gardner to be picked in order to eclipse those Buckeyes and Tigers and join the Bulldogs.

That would set a seven-round record, but 15 would still fall short of the school record. Seventeen Longhorns were picked in the 1984 NFL Draft: Mossy Cade, Ed Williams, Doug Dawson, Fred Acorn, Rick McIvor, Craig Curry, Eric Holle, Jitter Fields, Jeff Leiding, John Haines, Ray Woodard, David Jones, John Walker, Adam Schreiber, Bobby Micho, Kirk McJunkin, and Mark Lang.

That draft featured 12 rounds, however. Ten Longhorns were picked in the first seven rounds with seven joining them in rounds 8-12.

Based off combine invites, 14 is attainable. Fifteen is also possible, but is a tougher mountain to climb. Should Texas reach the peak this draft, they’ll join elite company as far as putting players into the seven-round draft goes.
