Texas heads to the Red River Shootout as the No. 1 team for the first time in 40 years

For the first time since 1984, the Texas Longhorns are entering the Red River Shootout as the No. 1 team in the AP Poll.

Texas returned to the top spot on Sunday after the Alabama Crimson Tide fell from No. 1 to No. 7 following their loss to the Vanderbilt Commodores. Oklahoma was ranked No. 18, tied with Kansas State and Indiana.

Texas is 32-7-3 in games ranked as the No. 1 team in the country, including four games against Oklahoma. Texas defeated the Sooners as the top ranked team in 1946, 1964, and 1965. Texas tied No. 2 Oklahoma 15-15 in 1984, the last time the Longhorns went to Dallas as the No. 1 team in the land. Todd Dodge was Texas’ quarterback. Mack Brown was Oklahoma’s offensive coordinator.

The last No. 1 ranked team to play in the Red River Shootout was the 2008 Sooners. Texas defeated Oklahoma 45-35 in one of the most thrilling games in the history of the rivalry.

Texas garnered 52 of the 61 possible first-place votes. No. 2 Ohio State received the other nine.

Other SEC teams in the top 25 included No. 5 Georgia, No. 7 Alabama, No. 8 Tennessee, No. 9 Ole Miss, No. 13 LSU, No. 15 Texas A&M, No. 18 Oklahoma, and No. 21 Missouri.

Michigan, the only team from Texas’ non-conference schedule to make the rankings, was No. 24.

The Longhorns remained No. 1 in the USA LBM Coaches Poll as well, garnering 44 of the 55 first-place votes. Ohio State was No. 2 with all 11 remaining first-place votes.

SEC teams in the top 25 of the Coaches Poll included No. 4 Georgia, No. 7 Alabama, No. 8 Ole Miss, No. 9 Tennessee, No. 10 LSU, No. 14 Texas A&M, No. 16 Oklahoma, and No. 18 Missouri.

Michigan was the only team from Texas’ non-conference schedule to crack the Coaches Poll top 25. The Wolverines were ranked No. 21.
