Texas is one of several team in the early driver's seat in the SEC race

Texas baseball has gotten off to a roaring start in their first year in the Southeastern Conference. Sitting at 19-3 overall, the Longhorns are tied for first in the SEC with a 5-1 record after two weekends of league play. There is a decent chance that Texas could get off to an 8-1 start after a trip to Missouri, and be the only team remaining in the league with that record in conference play.

Let’s look at the 5-1 teams and who they have coming up this weekend.

Rankings are via D1Baseball.
No. 1 Tennessee is the second most team likely to sweep their opponent, but it will be a little bit harder than the task the Longhorns are facing at Missouri. The Vols head on the road to take on South Carolina, who is coming off being swept themselves. The Gamecocks are a good team that will be hungry for blood.
No. 2 Arkansas will also be heading on the road, a common theme here. They, unlike Texas, will be playing a top-15 team in the nation in Vanderbilt. The Commodores just swept a better-than-their-record-suggests Texas A&M. It is likely the Razorbacks drop a game in Nashville.
No. 3 Georgia is the only team in this bunch that gets to play at home, but they face the highest ranked opponent of the four 5-1 teams. The Bulldogs will play the No. 11 Auburn Tigers in what will be a great weekend of SEC baseball. Auburn is looking to make a statement, and they are probably the most likely to win at least one game.

No. 7 Texas heads on the road to the lowest ranked team in the SEC standings. The Missouri Tigers are coming off of getting swept by Ole Miss at home and while it will be no small task to sweep them, it is probably the most likely sweep of the four series being played by 5-1 teams. This Texas team is plenty hungry after an energizing bout versus the No. 2 LSU Tigers at home.
To reiterate the point that sweeping teams in the SEC on the road is no small task, there have only been four road sweeps out of 16 series so far in the SEC. Granted, one of them was against Missouri, but the Tigers will be looking to get a huge win and possibly take a series in a huge way. However if the Longhorns can put themselves at the top of the SEC at 8-1, they could be bringing some massive implications to a potential top-five matchup versus Georgia at the Disch.

It is also worth noting the Longhorns will have to continue to prove themselves week in and week out or they will be flushed down the drain. With games against opponents currently ranked No. 3 in Georgia, No. 11 in Auburn, No. 2 in Arkansas, and No. 9 in Oklahoma (Home / Away). Life in the SEC is a battle week in and week out, but the Longhorns are in the driver’s seat.
