Former Longhorns Derrick Johnson won the award in 2004 and was also a finalist in 2003, as was Sergio Kindle in 2009.

He was named to the Chuck Bednarik Award watch list, the Maxwell Football Club announced, and the Lombardi Award watch list before the beginning of the year. Overshown is one of seven Longhorns named to the Reese’s Senior Bowl watch list.

The Chuck Bednarik Award is presented annually to the most outstanding defensive player in college football. The Lombardi Award is presented annually to the college football offensive or defensive lineman, who in addition to outstanding performance and ability, best exemplifies the character and discipline of NFL Hall of Fame Head Coach Vince Lombardi. Overshown was also named to the Bronco Nagurski Trophy watch list.
