Believe it or not, the transfer portal window opens up on April 16, so having a good grasp of the names at each position and total number of scholarships being utilized is of tremendous importance.

No matter what happens with the House v. NCAA case in the coming weeks, Texas will have to operate with an 85-man scholarship limit in the 2025 season due to Southeastern Conference regulations. So how many players are at each position and in each class? That will tell us where Texas may look to bolster the roster via the transfer portal, or possibly suffer some defections ahead of the 2025 campaign.

Quarterback (3)

Arch Manning (Will Gallagher/Inside Texas)

Opinion: Texas has Joe Tatum and Luke Dunham as walk-ons in the room, but I think there would be value in adding an experienced veteran with minimal playing time expectations who’d like to maybe finish his career at Texas and work toward a graduate degree. Will Cam Rising‘s credits transfer? Is there someone from the Ivy League?

Running back (6)

Tre Wisner
Quintrevion Wisner (Will Gallagher/Inside Texas)

Opinion: Evan Vieth laid it out well this week in what Texas might look to add from the portal.

Wide receiver (8)

DeAndre Moore
DeAndre Moore (Brett Davis-Imagn Images)

Opinion: There is a need to add from the talent perspective, but don’t be surprised if Steve Sarkisian mentions needing to fill out a room when he talks about his additions. He did last year when referring to bringing in Matthew Golden, Isaiah Bond, and Silas Bolden.

Tight end (5)

Jeff Banks
Jeff Banks (Will Gallagher/Inside Texas)

Opinion: I’d view this as priority 1A in the portal, even above wide receiver.

Offensive line (16)

DJ Campbell
DJ Campbell (Will Gallagher/Inside Texas)

Opinion: A healthy pipeline, but remember there are only five on the field at one time. It does help that 11 of the 16 are underclassmen, and those 11 are more inclined to wait their turn for playing time.

Defensive tackle (8)

Alex January
Alex January (Will Gallagher/Inside Texas)

Opinion: Needs one more, but looks as if the portal additions are winners. I’m a Travis Shaw Truther, but Cole Brevard received some lofty praise from Vernon Broughton a couple of weeks ago.

EDGE (6)

Ethan Burke
Ethan Burke (Will Gallagher/Inside Texas)

Opinion: Toyed with Texas Tech-bound David Bailey, who would have provided good Buck depth with Moore now at Will, but this room is in good shape.

Linebacker (7)

Anthony Hill
Anthony Hill (Will Gallagher/Inside Texas)

Opinion: Excited to see what the top five can do.

Defensive back (17)

Michael Taaffe
Michael Taaffe (Will Gallagher/Inside Texas)

Opinion: Even with a Thorpe Award-winner and an early-round pick leaving, this group has experience that needs to manifest this season in order to reach lofty preseason aspirations. They’ll have new coaches in Duane Akina and Mark Orphey to guide them, but it’s hard to bet against a group that features Guilbeau, Taaffe, Muhammad, and McDonald.

Specialists (5)

Steve Sarkisian, Bert Auburn
Steve Sarkisian, Bert Auburn (Will Gallagher/Inside Texas)

Opinion: Will Texas carry two kickers AND two punters into the 2025 season? Let’s address the former first. Stone replaced Auburn at the end of the season, and let’s remember a truth about college football: football players want to play football no matter their position.

Kickers want to kick, and kickers prefer to do more than just kick off. With eligibility running out for both players after this season, a portal defection from either Stone or Auburn is not out of the realm of possibility. However, it’s not something Sarkisian needs to have happen to create room for an imPort at an offensive or defensive position. Both are playing their last year on the 40 Acres if they stay.

At punter, here’s what I wrote in February that I believe holds true today:

The Longhorns brought in Bouwmeester, but that wasn’t because they’ve given up on Kern. Rather, Texas wants Kern to learn from the Aussie and get a better grasp on some of the finer points of punting, things that seem inconsequential but actually make a difference when trying to angle a kick away from a returner. The future belongs the Kern, who has handled this process well according to people close to the program, but only after Bouwmeester controls the present.

Class split

  • Seniors: 13
  • Juniors: 10
  • Sophomores: 22
  • Redshirt freshmen: 11
