Texas' 2022-23 non-conference schedule released

How will Texas Longhorns men’s basketball ‘Bless the Mood’ during year one in the Moody Center and year two under head coach Chris Beard? With a November 16 game versus Gonzaga.

That game with the Pacific Northwest powerhouse will be Texas’ third game of the season, as the Longhorns announced their 2022-23 non-conference schedule on Thursday.

Beard’s bunch will open the Moody Center with its first of eight non-conference regular season games versus UTEP on Monday, November 7. Texas will follow that game with a home matchup versus Houston Baptist on Thursday, November 10.

Gonzaga comes to town six days later on Wednesday, November 16. Then, the Longhorns embark on a trip south for a multi-team event in the Rio Grande Valley as part of the Leon Black Classic. Texas will play Northern Arizona on Monday, November 21 at the Bert Ogden Arena in Edinburg in game one of the LBC. Then, the Longhorns will host UT-Rio Grande Valley on Saturday, November 26 in Gregory Gym.

Following a brief stretch away from its new home, Texas returns to the Moody Center on Thursday, December 1 with a game versus Creighton as part of the Big 12-Big East battle. Beard and company then participate in another midseason event when they travel to New York City for a game at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday, December 6 versus Illinois.

The Longhorns return home to face Arkansas-Pine Bluff as part of the Jimmy Blacklock Classic on Saturday, December 10. Blacklock was the first African-American starter for the Longhorn men’s basketball program.

Two days later on Monday, December 12, the Longhorns host former Southwest Conference rival Rice in Austin. Then on Sunday, December 18, Texas travels to Dallas for the Pac-12 Coast-to-Coast Challenge. Reports indicate Stanford will be Texas’ opponent in the American Airlines Center.

The Longhorns then play two games prior to the turn of the calendar, first against Louisiana on Wednesday, December 21 then Texas A&M-Commerce on Tuesday, December 27. A&M-Commerce is entering its first year playing at the Division I level.

The non-conference schedule concludes with a trip to Knoxville, Tenn. to take on Rick Barnes’ Tennessee Volunteers on Saturday, January 28 as part of the SEC/Big 12 Challenge.

Texas’ Big 12 Conference schedule has not yet been announced. The Longhorns were 22-12 last year in Beard’s first season, reaching the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
