The Longhorns, who face No. 17 Illinois Tuesday night, continue to close the gap on No. 1 Houston in the latest release of the AP Top 25 Poll. Texas received 14 first-place votes this week after receiving eight first-place votes in the week 4 AP Top 25 Poll. Texas also ascended to within 29 points of Houston (1,502-1,473) after being 67 points behind last week.
No. 2 remains the highest ranking for the program since the 2010 season.
The Longhorns (6-0) remain ranked behind only No. 1 Houston, with Virginia (7-0) and Purdue (8-0) holding down the No. 3 and no. 4 spots. UConn (8-0) rounds out the top 5 this week. The Cougars have a pair of tough contests coming up against No. 12 Alabama December 10 and at No. 3 Virginia December 17. Should Houston win both, they have a very good opportunity to remain No. 1 all season.
The last time Texas was ranked No. 1 was in the January 18, 2010 poll.
