As the college football calendar flips to the vitally important month of November, so too does attention begin to shift toward the College Football Playoff. Though the Texas Longhorns with their three losses are in no way a top four contender, Steve Sarkisian’s team still was included in the initial top 25 from the College Football Playoff committee which was released on Tuesday night.

The Longhorns (5-3, 3-2 Big 12) were ranked as the No. 24 team in the committee’s initial rankings.

The Big 12 leading TCU Horned Frogs (8-0, 5-0 Big 12) were slotted as the No. 7 team, the conference’s highest rated representative. Behind them was Kansas State, the Longhorns’ upcoming opponent. The Wildcats (6-2, 4-1 Big 12) received the No. 13 ranking. The Oklahoma State Cowboys (6-2, 3-2) joined KSU, TCU, and UT with the No. 18 ranking.

No other teams from the state of Texas were included in the committee’s selection.

The playoff semifinals this year will be hosted by the Fiesta Bowl and the Peach Bowl on December 31, 2022. The College Football Playoff National Championship is scheduled for January 9, 2023. SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, Calif. will serve as the host site.

Texas’ highest finish ever in the CFP rankings came in 2018 when they were the No. 15 team following a loss to the Oklahoma Sooners in the Big 12 Championship.
