The Texas Longhorns (17-1, 3-0 SEC) began league play in the Southeastern Conference in style over the weekend, sweeping the Mississippi State Bulldogs in Starkville. As a result, the Longhorns moved into the top 10, up from No. 11 to No. 8 in the D1Baseball top 25.

A Casey Borba three-run homer in the seventh on Friday broke a 5-5 tie and gave Texas enough runs to hold off the Bulldogs for an 8-7 win, with Andre Duplantier earning the victory and Dylan Volantis garnering the save. Inclement weather across the southeast moved the Saturday game to Sunday as part of a double-header featuring two seven-inning games.

Max Belyeu’s two-run homer in the seventh inning of the middle game of the series pushed Texas ahead 5-3. Ruger Riojas earned the victory to give Texas its first SEC series win in program history. Then in the series finale, Jason Flores and Max Grubbs split pitching duties almost evenly. Flores earned the win and Grubbs received the 3.1 inning save as the pair allowed four hits and one earned run.

The Longhorns were one of 11 teams in the SEC to make the updated top 25 along with No. 1 Tennessee, No. 2 LSU, No. 3 Arkansas, No. 4 Georgia, No. 10 Oklahoma, No. 12 Alabama, No. 13 Florida, No. 18 Ole Miss, No. 20 Auburn, and No. 22 Vanderbilt. Texas A&M, previously No. 19, dropped out of the rankings.

The Longhorns host system-mate UTSA this Tuesday at UFCU Disch-Falk Field before beginning a three-game series with the No. 2 LSU Tigers, who dropped one spot after the Volunteers took over the No. 1 position in the poll. The matchup with the Roadrunners will be on SEC Network+, as will games two and three of the series with the Tigers. Friday’s game will be on SEC Network.
