Texas nets Obi Eboh

AUSTIN — His patience paid off.

The senior cornerback from Southlake Carroll committed to Texas today before UT’s clash with Notre Dame in South Bend. The 6-foot-1, 180-pound defender held offers from Oklahoma, Ole Miss, and Arkansas among the many.

Eboh was impressive at the Opening in Oregon last summer.

“I just have to be patient,” Eboh told IT last month. “Sometimes it’s hard, but it’s recruiting, you don’t know what’s really going happen sometimes. It’s kind of hard to tell, but I just have to stay patient with them I believe. Last year (Texas) commits at DB didn’t come until late January. So I know I’ve got time. Coach Strong emphasizes having discipline, and coming from Southlake Carroll I think that going to a program like that won’t be a hard transition.”

How does he fit at Texas: Eboh checks off the main desired attributes of a Strong corner with length (6-foot-1), quickness (4.57 40, 4.31 shuttle and comfortable with shuffle technique), and physicality in a Carroll defense that asks him at times to be a force player and at other times to be a deep zone player. At Texas, he’d fit best as a field corner that could use the wide spaces there as a shield to protect his lack of elite recovery speed. Eboh is a great cover 3 corner as his length would make deep throws risky while his willingness and ability as a tackler would help the D bend without breaking. He’s a versatile enough DB to be a take for the Texas D. – IB

Coach says: This kid comes from a football factory in Southlake Carroll, so you know he is coached up. He’s tall, long, rangy, – what coaches across the country are looking for – and he has decent make-up speed. On top of that, he is physical and has no problem laying the wood, or coming up and putting a body on the ball carrier in run support. This is the type of corner everyone is looking to get on their team, and after his performance at The Opening, I think it is safe to say even more schools will take notice of him.

How this affects Texas: Eboh is a known commodity in Austin. He’s also a fan of the Longhorns and Charlie Strong. I’m hearing the latter more and more these days. Eboh attended one of the UT football camps in June and left impressed by the program and staff. Despite not holding a UT offer, he understands it’s a business. I think he would wait for a Texas invitation, PJ Locke style, up until NSD morning. With his breakout performance at The Opening, I wouldn’t be surprised if Strong offers sooner rather than later. He will not be attending UTL, but don’t fret. He should be back for a game in the fall and he’s plenty interested in Austin. – JW

Eboh is the 9th member of UT’s Class of 2016.
