Texas opens as massive favorite for season opener versus Rice

The 2023 Texas Longhorns football season is just over 100 days away, and some betting lines have started to trickle out for the opening slate of games. BetOnline.ag released lines for Week 0 and Week 1 contests on Wednesday, including the Texas season opener.

Texas opened as a 35 point favorite over the Owls.

The Longhorns return 10 starters on offense and a number of defensive standouts from a team that went 8-5 and finished third in the Big 12 Conference behind TCU and champion Kansas State.

Other BetOnline.ag numbers pertaining to the Longhorns include +105 odds to win the Big 12 and a win total of 9.5.

Texas is currently a 6.5-point underdog to Alabama for their Sept. 9 matchup, and 8-point favorite over Baylor for the Sept. 23 contest, a 17-point favorite for a game scheduled for Sept. 30, a 6-point favorite in the Red River Showdown, a 9.5-point favorite over K-State for their Nov. 4 game, and a 5-point favorite over TCU for a game scheduled for Nov. 11.

Rice recorded a 5-8 season in 2022, making a bowl game with a 5-7 regular season record. The Owls lost to Southern Miss in the LendingTree Bowl. JT Daniels is set to lead Rice this year after transferring from West Virginia. Rice’s 2023 win total is set at four wins.

The Longhorns lead the all-time series with the Owls 74-21-1. Texas has won the last 15 games in the series dating back to 1995.
