In what has become an incredibly common occurrence, on Monday, Texas players won weekly awards given out by the SEC. This week it was defensive tackle Vernon Broughton who won co-defensive player of the week while running back Tre Wisner won co-offensive player of the week.

Broughton, a senior, was incredibly active all game. He even had one series in the second quarter that could be accurately described as The Vernon Broughton Series. On the day, Broughton had two sacks, two tackles for loss, and made the game clinching fumble recovery. When he wasn’t making the play, he was making it easier for his teammates to do so.

Wisner, a sophomore, ran with conviction and heart all night long and helped ice the game in the fourth quarter. He accounted for 33 carries and 186 yards. One had to watch Wisner’s performance to truly appreciate it. He consistently broke off medium sized gains thanks to good vision, acceleration, and tackle-breaking. He simply would not be denied.

These award winners are a microcosm of just how talented and deep this Texas team is. Texas Sports Information Director, John Bianco, said it best:

This statistic ties in perfectly with insider notes Inside Texas shared with its readers on Monday morning.

A source mentioned the defense is so good because they don’t rely on one person. “There’s what, 17-18 guys who play a significant amount and they’re largely interchangeable. Some might say Anthony Hill eliminates a lot, or Colin Simmons is tough off the edge, but you can just keep going down the list like that. You say the same about Barron. Taaffe eliminates a lot in the back end. Or then you have Alfred Collins, but then Vernon Broughton just had a ridiculous game. Barry Sorrel doesn’t get much press but look how he played. A couple weeks ago you asked about Ethan Burke having a quiet year. You just don’t know who is going to ball out. They’re so balanced with no weak spots. What or who do you target?”

Indeed, thanks to a strong approach to recruiting high school and out of the portal, the Texas roster is as balanced as you’ll find in college football. That shows up on the field which then shows up in the SEC weekly awards.

Speaking of recruiting, make sure to take advantage of IT promos to follow the latest happenings with Signing Day on Wednesday and the opening of the portal next Monday.
