Texas' recruiting approach goes much deeper than flashy cars and NIL opportunities
In his press conference on Wednesday, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian focused on the long-term vision for Texas football, emphasizing the importance of building a sustainable roster rather than being a “one-hit wonder.” He discussed the challenges posed by the end of eligibility for “COVID-era” players, the impact of the transfer portal, NIL opportunities, and the growing factor of potential revenue-sharing models. Sark emphasized the importance of assembling a roster that not only excels on the field but also aligns with the program’s culture and values.

Sarkisian also touched on his reputation as a master recruiter, particularly his ability to flip high-profile four- and five-star recruits late in the recruiting cycle. He attributed this success to the strong relationships he and his staff build with players and their families. Sark noted that recruiting is a holistic process, where understanding the player’s character, family dynamics, and long-term fit within the program are just as important as their talent on the field.
He highlighted that Texas’s recruiting process doesn’t stop when a player commits elsewhere. The staff, including recruiting support, trainers, and coaches, continue to engage with recruits and their families, ensuring that they are a perfect match for the team. Sark emphasized that this collective effort by the entire staff is what sets Texas apart in recruiting.
Sark also addressed the common perception of Texas’s flashy recruiting approach, such as luxury cars and extravagant official visits aimed at impressing recruits in a short 24- to 48-hour window. While these elements may catch attention, he explained that successful recruiting starts long before these visits. Building deep, meaningful relationships with recruits is the foundation of their strategy. This relationship-first approach helps ensure that the program attracts players who not only bring talent but also align with the program’s vision for long-term success.

Ultimately, Sarkisian reiterated his commitment to constructing a roster that can sustain excellence, focusing on cultural fit, talent, and character to avoid being a program built for short-term gains. This methodical approach reflects his determination to create a Texas football program that thrives for years to come.
