After an 8-4 campaign in Steve Sarkisian’s second season as head coach of the No. 21 Texas Longhorns, the program’s reward will be a short trip down IH-35 for the Valero Alamo Bowl, according to multiple reports and the Longhorn Network.

Texas will face the Pac-12 Conference’s No. 12 Washington Huskies (10-2) in the contest. The game will kick off at 8 p.m. on Thursday, December 29th at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. This is Texas’ 6th appearance in the Alamo Bowl, more than any other team.
In 2006, the No. 18 Longhorns defeated Iowa 26-24 during Colt McCoy’s first year as the Longhorns’ quarterback. The next Longhorn appearance in San Antonio was in 2012, when No. 23 Texas defeated No. 13 Oregon State 31-27 thanks to David Ash and Marquise Goodwin.
The Longhorns made a return to the game the following year. Texas’ loss to the No. 10 Oregon Ducks was former head coach Mack Brown’s final game leading the UT program.

Texas’ next trip to San Antonio wouldn’t be for another six years, but they made the most of it. Unranked Texas soundly defeated No. 12 Utah 38-10. The following year amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, No. 20 Texas throttled Colorado, 55-23. Sam Ehlinger, in his last game in burnt orange, only lasted one half before leaving due to injury. He was replaced by Casey Thompson, who delivered a strong showing in the Longhorns’ last bowl appearance.
The Valero Alamo Bowl has the first pick of Big 12 teams after the conference’s place in the College Football Playoff or the Allstate Sugar Bowl is filled.
