The Texas Longhorns (26-2, 12-1 SEC) moved from No. 2 to their position as the top-ranked team in the poll released Monday. Previous No. 1 Notre Dame, who defeated the Longhorns 80-70 in overtime on December 5, lost in double-overtime at NC State on Sunday and dropped to No. 3.
The Longhorns collected 19 first-place votes. No. 2 UCLA received 11 first-place votes. No. 4 USC earned one first-place vote.
This is the first time in Vic Schaefer‘s career that one of his teams has had the No. 1 by its name. Texas’ previous No. 2 standing ties a ranking Schaefer achieved while at Mississippi State. The Bulldogs were ranked No. 2 for most of the final month of the 2017-18 season on their way to a national runner-up finish to the Fighting Irish.
The last time Texas was No. 2 was also in 2017-18, when Karen Aston’s Longhorns started the season ranked No. 2 and spent the first portion of the season just behind the Connecticut Huskies.

Texas’ previous No. 1 ranking was during the 2003-04 season. With Jody Conradt as head coach and led by Tiffany Jackson-Jones, Heather Schreiber, Stacy Stephens, and Jamie Carey, the Longhorns were atop the poll for two weeks.
The 2024-25 Longhorns are led by superstar Madison Booker plus Taylor Jones, Rori Harmon, and Kyla Oldacre. Texas’ sole loss in SEC play, a 67-50 loss at South Carolina, was avenged a few weeks later with a 66-62 victory in Austin.
Other SEC teams in the women’s AP Poll included No. 6 South Carolina, No. 7 LSU, No. 11 Tennessee, No. 13 Oklahoma, No. 15 Kentucky, and No. 20 Alabama.
