Texas Softball Bounces Back From Stanford Loss With 3 Straight Wins

On Friday, the Longhorns fell to the Stanford Cardinal 9-5. The Horns started freshman pitcher Cambria Salmon, in a common trend that Mike White has done in big games early, just like what he did last year with star Teagan Kavan. But, Salmon gave up two early runs in the first inning, and was pulled out for Kavan, who also ended up giving up a few runs. The bats for the Horns put up 5 runs, but were unable to keep up with the explosiveness of the Cardinal, who hit three home runs, with two of them coming from Allie Clements.
Going into the game, the undefeated Longhorns were No. 1, and had beaten a top ten Texas Tech team twice. Stanford was 10-1, ranked No. 20, and coming off a tough loss to a top 15 Arizona team.
Later on Friday evening, Texas responded to the loss with an 18-2 beatdown of Colorado State. Fueled by a 9-run 5th, Texas run-ruled the Rams in 5 innings. Texas superstar Reese Atwood gave the Horns two home runs and 5 RBI, and Vanessa Quiroga added 4 RBI. Pitcher Mac Morgan held the Rams to 2 runs on 2 hits, striking out a single batter.
Then, at lunchtime on Saturday, Texas defeated UC-Davis 12-0, also run-ruling them in 5 innings. Quiroga added another 4 RBI with Katie Stewart giving the horns 3 more, and Cambria Salmon bounced back with a 9 strikeout outing, no hitting the Aggies.

In the evening, Texas faced off against Arizona, defeating the Wildcats in 8 innings, 8-4. A 3-3 1st inning had the game looking like it would be a shootout, but Kavan settled in and the Wildcats changed pitchers, slowing both offenses down. No one would score until Cimusz hit a RBI-double in the 6th to take a 4-3 lead. But Arizona tied it in the 7th to send it to extra innings. Texas finally exploded in the 8th, scoring 4 runs, 3 of them coming on a homer by Kayden Henry. Citlaly Gutierrez shut down the ‘Cats for the last 1.2 innings, giving Texas another ranked win.
This Texas team, now 14-1 on the season, has a very balanced offensive attack, with two very good experienced pitchers, and some young talent. One tough loss to a good Stanford team is by no means the end of the world for the Horns, and based on their strong response, we can expect big things from this Texas team.
