Texas takes first game of away series against Kentucky 6-3

For the third time in as many weekends, Texas has taken the Friday night win away from home in the SEC thanks to timely hitting and a strong pitching performance.

While not as close as the Mississippi State game and far more testing than Missouri’s Friday night matchup, Texas’ 6-3 win over Kentucky was a happy middle ground, with both teams testing the opposing staffs in the coldest conditions Texas has played away from home this season.
Jared Spencer was on the mound tonight and delivered a solid performance, nearly completing five innings with seven strikeouts and just one earned run. Spencer’s command was a bit off today, and the Wildcats fought through many tough at-bats, leading to the lefty nearly eclipsing 100 pitches before he was taken out just over halfway through the game. Hitting three batters didn’t help his WHIP line for the day.
Thankfully for the Longhorns, Max Grubbs and Dylan Volantis allowed just two runs (both Grubbs’) in the final 4 1/3 innings while the bats woke up in the final three innings. Trailing by one entering the seventh, Texas’ offense didn’t have to rely on home run power to reclaim the lead.
First baseman Kimble Schuessler led off the inning with a single, followed by right fielder Tommy Farmer IV singling and advancing to second to put two in scoring position with no outs. Even after a Jaquae Stewart pinch-hit strikeout, second baseman Ethan Mendoza came through in the clutch, driving in both runners on an odd double to right that looked like it could have been played much better by the Wildcat outfield. Rylan Galvan’s single on a 3-2 count gave Texas a two-run lead.

Mendoza continued his hot streak just one inning later, stepping up to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs. His single up the middle drove in another two runs, completing his night with four RBIs and a run on his two hits.
Kentucky made it interesting in the ninth with Grubbs allowing two baserunners, but Volantis was able to weather the storm. The freshman lefty rolled two groundouts, one scoring a run, but struck out first baseman Hudson Brown looking on an 0-2 count to finish the game.
