The only way Texas, the No. 9 overall seed in the 2022 NCAA baseball tournament, would play a super regional in Austin was if East Carolina failed to win the Greenville, N.C. regional. The Pirates were pushed to a deciding game seven by the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers, but they were able to prevail over CCU on Monday, 13-4. As a result, the Longhorns will head to Greenville for a best two-out-of-three series at Clark-LeClair Stadium with a spot in the College World Series on the line.

ECU (45-19, 20-4 AAC) has won 21 of its last 22 games, the only blemish a loss to the Chanticleers on Sunday. The Pirates have advanced to the super regionals six times in program history, including the last three full seasons.

The Pirates advanced out of the Greenville regional by defeating Coppin State in the opening round and Virginia in the second game. Their 9-1 loss to Coastal Carolina on Sunday forced the deciding game seven in which they cruised.

Clark-LeClair Field will be a raucous environment for the Longhorns. The stadium’s listed capacity is 5,000, but the program set a record for attendance with 5,603 on hand at the stadium known in east Carolina as “The Jungle.”

Texas (45-19, 14-10 Big 12) is on the road in the NCAA postseason for the first time since 2017 when the Longhorns fell in the regional final to Long Beach State. The last time the Longhorns played in a super regional away from UFCU Disch-Falk Field was in 2005, when Texas defeated Ole Miss in the Oxford regional before eventually winning the program’s sixth national championship.

The Longhorns are playing in their 12th super regional since the NCAA expanded the tournament format in 1999.

Start times and dates for the series have not yet been set. The super regional could start on Friday or on Saturday, depending on a decision by the NCAA. The winner of the three-game series will advance to the College World Series. Texas is looking for a third trip to Omaha under Pierce and 38th trip overall, while ECU is looking to advance for the first time in program history.
