For the first time since January 7, Texas plans to have Chendall Weaver available.

“There’s a good chance you’re probably going to see Chendall Weaver moving around,” Texas head coach Rodney Terry said Friday. “Again, he may not be the complete version of himself because of the time he’s missed. He’s still working his way back in. Nevertheless, there’s a great chance you’ll see him out there tomorrow.”

Weaver, who has missed two months with a hip injury, should be part of the plans for the Texas Longhorns (17-13, 6-11) on Saturday when they face the Oklahoma Sooners (18-12, 5-12 SEC) in the 2024-25 regular season finale.

Weaver last played on January 7 in the Longhorns’ 87-82 loss to Auburn. He played just two minutes before his hip injury, and has not seen game action since. Weaver has been a staple on the SEC Student-Athlete Availability Report since then, better known as an injury report, but he’s always been listed as out.

While the injury report doesn’t come out until later Friday evening, Terry is looking forward to what Weaver will be able to provide in his just-in-time return.

“I think the thing Chendall brings to the table is his effort and energy is contagious,” Terry said. “I think when you saw our team play early in the year when he was on the floor, whether we were in New York, that dude is the difference in winning in New York and winning a championship up there and not doing it. He just makes winning plays. He makes other guys on the floor play harder defensively.

“He’s just an energy guy. When you take that away from your team, when he’s probably your most energetic and probably your toughest guy, when you talk about making those types of plays it changes your team. It’s a big piece that you miss. He’s in at winning time. We talk about winning time, Chendall Weaver is in at winning time making winning plays.”

In 15 games this season, Weaver has averaged 6.7 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 1.5 assists. He’s hit 51 percent of his field goals in just about 21 minutes per game. Texas has gone 6-9 in his absence during SEC play, and his presence will be a critical part of the Longhorns’ efforts not only to reach seven conference wins but also to make the NCAA Tournament.

Since Weaver’s injury, Texas has put Devon Pryor out on the floor more and more. However, Weaver’s return comes at an opportune time as Pryor only played 10 minutes last game due to an injury.

“Devon’s play has definitely stepped up and played well. We’ve given him an opportunity, but he’s had to play through some injuries as well,” Terry said. “He went out in the last game and couldn’t come back in the second half because of a different injury.”

Weaver’s return comes when Texas needs him most, and is part of a mentality the Longhorns will have to carry all the way through Saturday’s game, the SEC Tournament, and, possibly, the NCAA Tournament.

“There’s always a next man mentality,” Terry said. “Every guy that dresses has to be ready for their opportunity. When their number is called, they’ve got to be ready to play and play at a high level for us.”
