After a terrible shooting start to the night, including a near 10 minute span with no baskets, Texas overcame a 12-point deficit to beat the LSU Tigers 68-65. Madison Booker struggled mightily, going 3/17 from the floor, but still got to 16 points by going 10/10 from the free throw line. The Horns as a whole were great from the line, going 21/21 on the day. The bigs for Texas, Taylor Jones and Kyla Oldacre, both struggled significantly more in this win than they have in the past few games.

The win over the Tigers marks the 4th straight ranked win for the Longhorns and vaulted the program to No. 2 in the country, just behind Notre Dame.

First, they beat No. 24 Vanderbilt at home, 87-66, in a game where Texas shot 52.8% from the field and nearly 70% from 3. Booker gave the Horns 20 points and 6 rebounds with Shay Holle adding 16 points while shooting 80% from 3.

Then, the Longhorns beat #2 South Carolina 66-62, snapping a 57 game regular season conference winning streak, and avenging one of Texas’ only two losses on the season. The two bigs for Texas, Jones and Oldacre, combined for 24 points, with Booker giving the Horns 20 points and 11 rebounds.

On the following Thursday, the Horns went into Lexington and defeated 8th ranked Kentucky 67-49. Once again, Booker, Jones, and Oldacre played tremendous on offense for the Longhorns, combining for 53 points. Texas did not shoot great, at 38.2%, with a measly 8.3% from 3, but made up for it with a 20-5 offensive rebound advantage, and a 45-28 total rebound advantage.

Finally, on Sunday, Texas beat No. 5 LSU in Austin, giving the Horns their fourth straight ranked win, and third straight against a top 10 opponent.

With the win over the Tigers, Texas technically leads the SEC, having played one more game than South Carolina, and is still in a prime position to tie for, or outright win, a regular season SEC championship. If Texas continues to play like it has recently, it should be able to beat the three remaining unranked teams on the schedule, and secure at least a tie.

Additionally, after No. 1 UCLA lost a close game to USC earlier in the week, and with No. 2 Notre Dame playing a weaker recent schedule, there was a real possibility that Texas could jump to No. 1 in the next set of polls. Alas, the Horns finished just behind Notre Dame, who beat the Horns by 10 in OT earlier in the season.

Regardless, Texas has put itself in prime position to be a top 4 seed in the NCAA tournament, and has the experience, and personnel, to make a deep run this season.
