The Texas Longhorns are in the playoffs but first things first

The Texas A&M Aggies love to believe the road to Texas’ success travels through College Station. For once, they’re right. If Texas wants to play in the SEC Championship Game and avenge its humbling loss to Georgia, the Longhorns must first defeat A&M on its home turf.

Tragically, Texas hasn’t beaten A&M since 2011.

Due to a wild Saturday, the Longhorns are in the playoffs. We need not wait until Tuesday night to get a better understanding of the playoff picture. Alabama’s no-show in Norman and Ole Miss’ meltdown in Gainesville sealed the deal for Texas. It was a bad day for SEC apparatchiks in the media who thought Alabama and Ole Miss were superior to Texas. We can discuss that later.

We can also discuss later how Texas dismantled Kentucky in ways Georgia, Ole Miss, and Tennessee couldn’t. Now’s not the time, I don’t want to lose focus like Mike Elko at a press conference.

Goal No. 1 for Texas this season has been to win the SEC. Yes, Texas’ goals are much larger, but to achieve success you must follow an orderly process.

Steve Sarkisian on November 4:

“Our goal, our first goal, is to go win a SEC championship. That’s what we’re striving for. When that day comes and goes, then we’ll recalibrate and get ourselves prepared for what the next part of the season could be if we’re fortunate enough to get in there. But it’s an honor. If you’re a team that can hoist that trophy in this conference knowing the rigors of the opponents and how difficult it can be, I think that’s a heck of an honor for our players and for our staff if we’re able to do something like that.”

Juxtapose that with Lane Kiffin‘s mindset.

I wonder if Kiffin would rather be in the SEC Championship Game now.

Which mindset yields to consistency? Which mindset is more likely to embrace conflict and power through it? Which team’s talented quarterback is more likely to lead his team to victory on a hampered ankle and which one is more likely to be nearly in tears after melting down in the fourth quarter?

Sark’s embrace of the process is what has made him the coach he is today. It’s how he has improved Texas across the board since the day he arrived. The true meaning of All Gas, No Brakes is Sark’s day-in, day-out embrace of the process. It’s what has made him a tremendous problem solver.

Now A&M is in the crosshairs of the process and Texas’ first goal but Texas is also in the Aggie’s crosshairs. Fans would be wise to forget A&M’s overtime loss to Auburn last night. While the Aggies have holes in their team, and Texas holds most of the advantages, Texas could just as sure lose to A&M as A&M lost to Auburn, as Florida lost to Kentucky, and Alabama lost to OU.

I just don’t think it will happen because of Sark’s ‘first thing’s first’ process.
