Texas, currently No. 2 in the AP Poll, was revealed to be the No. 3 overall seed in the top 16 release by the NCAA on Sunday. The placement has Vic Schaefer’s squad as the top seed in the Birmingham 3 regional, ahead of No. 2 UConn, No. 3 North Carolina, and No. 4 Ohio State.

UCLA was the top seed followed by USC, Texas, and Notre Dame. UCLA has suffered just one loss this year, and it came at the hands of the USC Trojans last Thursday. Notre Dame is currently No. 1 in the AP poll.

ESPN’s women’s bracketology also views the Longhorns as a No. 1 seed, placing them atop the Birmingham 2 regional.

Either way, the Longhorns are in prime position to earn a No. 1 seed for the second consecutive season. Texas was a No. 1 seed last year, advancing to the Elite Eight before falling to North Carolina State.

The last time Texas was able to earn a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament in back to back years? When the Longhorns were a No. 1 seed for four straight season between 1984 and 1988. That featured the program’s only national title in 1986, a championship that put a cap on a perfect 34-0 season under Conradt.

Texas went 15 seasons between No. 1 seeds before Conradt led Texas back to the top of the bracket in 2004. Schaefer’s 2024 squad was the first to reach a No. 1 seed since that 2004 team.

The Longhorns are led by players typically seen on a No. 1 team. Madison Booker, the 2024 Big 12 player of the year and an All-American, leads Texas with 16.6 points and 6.7 rebound per game. Right behind her is Taylor Jones, who posts 12.5 points and 6.8 boards per game. Key players like Rori Harmon, Kyla Oldacre, Shay Holle, Jordan Lee, and Justice Carlton all average over 6.0 points per game.

The Longhorns are top 10 in scoring offense, scoring margin, free throws made per game, free throws attempted per game, turnover margin, rebound margin, offensive rebounds, and top 20 in a number of other categories.

Texas is No. 3 in the NCAA’s NET rankings and boasts an 11-2 record in Quadrant 1 games, a win total in that category more than any other team.
