Three Thousands: Texas' offense is well on its way to another school first this season
There haven’t been many times where we have seen two Longhorn running backs tally 1000 total yards in the same season, much less two running backs tally 1000 total yards and Texas post a 1000-yard receiver.

Entering the Cotton Bowl, 2024 Texas is 64 Matthew Golden receiving yards away from being the first team in school history to accomplish that feat as Quintrevion Wisner has 1287 total yards and Jaydon Blue has gained 1023 total yards. Wisner, of course, has also rushed for 1018 yards to give Texas a 1000-yard rusher for the fourth-straight season under Steve Sarkisian.
Inside Texas member @Haab asked two questions regarding the two 1000-yard backs…
- When was the last time two Longhorn RBs eclipsed 1000 total yards?
- When was the last time that happened AND Texas had a 1000-yard receiver?
The answer for the first question is quite a while, and the year it happened was the closest Texas has ever come to having two 1000-yard rushers in the same season. In 1995, Shon Mitchell (1153 rush yards) was paired with an extremely talented freshman named Ricky Williams (990 rush yards). Those two both eclipsed 1000 total yards. That’s the only other time in school history that’s happened aside from 2024.
Yet that doesn’t mean Texas hasn’t been close. Just last year in 2023, Texas was 185 yards from Cedric Baxter away from being having two 1000-total yard backs with Baxter and Jonathon Brooks. If he had made that total, those two would have made history alongside Xavier Worthy‘s 1000-yard season.
In 2019, Texas was just as close with Keaontay Ingram posting 1095 offensive yards. Roschon Johnson was 193 yards away from joining him. If Johnson gained those 193 yards, Devin Duvernay would have helped Texas answer the second question positively as he notched 1386 receiving yards.

Texas approached having two 1000-total yard backs and a 1000-yard receiver in 2018 with Ingram and Tre Watson. Ingram tallied 929 yards while Watson posted 878 during the season. That was the year that Lil’Jordan Humphrey had his 1176-yard season.
The answer for the second question is never. In that aforementioned 1995 season, Mike Adams led the team in receiving yards with 942. For the curious, he rushed for nine yards, so he did not get to 1000 total yards. As mentioned in a recent article, Texas has never really been a passing team. There are only 11 1000-yard season by a receiver at Texas, and the first was in 1998 with Wane McGarity (1087 yards).

This is a fun Texas offense to watch and they spread the ball around to multiple guys with success, no stat probably speaks to this more than this one.
