Tre Johnson named SEC Freshman of the Year, earns second-team All-SEC, All-Freshman team honors

The SEC’s leading scorer is the SEC’s top freshman. Texas guard Tre Johnson, who is averaging 20.2 points per game and shooting 43.4% from the field, 39.5% from three, and 88.3% at the free throw line, was named the SEC Freshman of the Year and earned second-team All-Southeastern Conference honors. He was also named to the SEC’s All-Freshman team, the league announced Monday.

Johnson’s 20.2 points per game is ahead of first-team guards Mark Sears of Alabama, Zakai Zeigler of Tennessee, Wade Taylor IV of Texas A&M, and Walter Clayton of Florida.
Johnson was joined on the second team by Mississippi State’s Josh Hubbard, Tennessee’s Chaz Lanier, South Carolina’s Collin Murray-Boyles, and Kentucky’s Otega Oweh.
Johnson was the only Longhorn to earn a postseason accolade as chosen by the league’s 16 coaches.
A native of Dallas who started his prep career at Lake Highlands before finishing his high school days at Link Academy in Missouri, Johnson has put his name by Kevin Durant‘s in a number of freshman scoring records. He’s posted 585 points this year, third among freshman Longhorns behind Durant’s 903 in 2006-07 and Terrence Rencher’s 648 in 1991-92. Johnson’s per game scoring average would trail only Durant among freshmen in school history.
In SEC play, Johnson has averaged 20.4 points per contest on 40.4% shooting, 36.4% from three, and 89.9% from the line. He’s also averaged 3.5 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game in 36 minutes per conference contest.
The Longhorns remain on the outside looking in when it comes to most NCAA Tournament bracketology projections. Texas is 17-14 with a 6-12 record in league play and needs an extended SEC Tournament run to make it into the field of 68 before Johnson’s time on the 40 Acres is done.
However, in his short time in Austin, Johnson has put together one of the best freshman seasons in school history, and he was honored by the SEC for it on Monday.
