Trey Hopkins: Texas 'My Dream School'
“I’ve been talking to my parents and I knew (Texas) is my dream school,” said Hopkins. “I’ve followed the program for a long time and I’ve loved Texas. My mom was really impressed with the academics so that was big.”Hopkins (click here for database page), currently ranked No. 33 on the Inside Texas 2010 Top 100, went to Austin with his parents last week to get a closer look at the campus.“We took the visit last week just to get comfortable with the campus and to talk to the coaches and everything,” said Hopkins. “They never said anything about an offer but all that was said was that they weren’t going to offer anyone until after Signing Day.”Hopkins did not have to wait long and in fact, did not even have to make a trip to Austin for the Horns’ first Junior Day on Sunday. Hopkins instead received a phone call this afternoon from the Texas staff and everything fell together very, very quickly.“I knew that if they offered, that was the school I was going to commit to,” said Hopkins. “Coach (Mac) McWhorter had been recruiting me but today Coach (Oscar) Giles is the coach who called me. I mainly talked to him and Coach (Mack) Brown today.”The fact that Hopkins, an offensive lineman that could play either tackle or guard at the next level, is the Horns’ first commitment of the 2010 class means that he might be the only take at the position in this cycle. Texas is very deep with young talent in the trenches, especially after adding four offensive linemen in the 2009 class.Hopkins said he has been aware of the Horns’ situation with offensive line recruiting for quite some time and was worried that he might not get the call from Texas. But in the end, he is happy Texas found a place for him to be a member of the class that will sign on the dotted line just under 12 months from now.“I was getting that feeling (that Texas might not take any linemen in 2010),” said Hopkins. “But as soon as they offered I was just so happy, I was really excited.”“Texas is my dream school, and I knew they were short on spots,” Hopkins added. “But I’m just happy that they thought enough of me to offer.”The recruiting process is now over for Hopkins when things were just beginning to heat up, which is fine with the all-Greater Houston linemen now that he has picked the school that was at the top of his list. Hopkins pulled in an early offer from Texas A&M during the fall and he had also picked up offers from Houston, Stanford and Vanderbilt.“I’m feeling a lot of excitement but there’s also a little relief because the whole recruiting process was really starting to get hectic,” said Hopkins. “Now I’m done and I don’t have to worry about going back and forth and waiting if I’m going to hear from Texas or not.“Now I’m focused on getting bigger and stronger and getting ready and focused on my senior year of football and finishing my high school career.” Members Only: Why Trey Hopkins is a good choice for Texas Members Only: At least five junior prospects on campus Saturday
