The Sporting News is one of five major All-American selectors recognized by the NCAA when determining consensus or unanimous status along with the American Football Coaches Association, the AP, the Walter Camp Football Foundation, and the Football Writers Association of America.

Sweat awaits the decision of the AFCA to determine if he’s the 24th Longhorn to become a unanimous All-American. The 2023 Outland Trophy winner as the nation’s best interior lineman and the Big 12 defensive player of the year, Sweat recorded 42 tackles, 17 of them solo, with 8.0 tackles for loss, two sacks, a blocked kick, and four pass breakups. He also hauled in a touchdown pass in the Big 12 Championship versus Oklahoma State.

Murphy, who was also named a second-team All-American by the AP, accumulated 26 tackles with 12 solo, 8.0 tackles for loss, and 5.0 sacks. Like Sweat, he also caught a touchdown pass. His came earlier in the season against Wyoming. Murphy was named the Big 12 defensive lineman of the year by the league’s coaches.

Opponents averaged only 80.8 yards per game on the ground thanks to the efforts of Murphy and Sweat, and converted just 26.5 percent of third-down opportunities. That was good for second in the nation.

Worthy, who earned second-team All-America honors from the FWAA as a punt returner and third-team status as an all-purpose player by the AP, ranked second in the nation in yards per punt return with 17.9. He was named a first-team All-Big 12 selection and led the conference in receiving yards with 969.
