While the start of this week wasn’t pretty for the Longhorns, Texas still sits as the No. 5 team in the country with a 23-4 record. In Texas’ first SEC season, the Longhorns have started 8-1 in conference play.
This, of course, comes off the backs of multiple fantastic performances from a really solid group of players. Head coach Jim Schlossnagle inherited some great talent with the likes of Max Belyeu, Will Gasparino, and Kimble Schuessler (among others), but he also used the portal and recruiting extremely effectively to fill out a full ball club.
The pair of Longhorns on D1 Baseball’s midseason All-American list come from each of these two philosophies and builds that Schlossnagle has used to turn this team into a great one. At catcher, D1 has Rylan Galvan as a first-team midseason All-American thanks to his .338 average, 1.298 OPS, and nine home runs.
Galvan has been the Longhorns’ best hitter on a team that includes a former Big 12 POTY and multiple rising stars in the SEC. Though currently battling an injury, Galvan has started 22 of a possible 27 games and provided Texas with some of its biggest hitting sprees in critical games. Many fans will never forget his home run against LSU to win that Saturday game.

On the other side of the plate, freshman LHP Dylan Volantis joined Galvan as a second-team midseason All-American reliever. Volantis wouldn’t have been an expected pick heading into the season, but it’s a no-brainer choice for the selection committee. In 23 innings, mostly in relief, Volantis has pitched to the tune of a 1.17 ERA and a 0.87 WHIP. His 27 strikeouts to four walks may be his most impressive stat line, and his six saves lead the team.

Galvan and Volantis have been arguably the two most important cogs in the machine that has been Texas baseball this year, and their efforts are already being rewarded. With Belyeu out for the regular season, it’s hard to expect anyone but Gasparino, who’s been on an absolute tear at the plate, to join these two on a postseason list, but either way, Texas is back to All-American-level baseball in Austin.
