The 6-foot-1 playmaker on both ends of the floor selected Texas over Tennessee and Purdue. He also made visits to Gonzaga and Kansas before trimming his list.
Hunter’s strength as a quick creator that can score the ball will be a near-perfect blend with the guards already on the Texas roster next season. The former On3 Consensus four-star recruit is arguably the most important recruit for the Longhorns since Chris Beard was hired.
The 6-foot-1 Hunter entered the portal as the Big 12 Freshman of the Year after averaging 11.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 2.0 steals for the Cyclones in 2021-22.
Hunter would help form a formidable backcourt
With Hunter in the fold, Texas will enter the 2022-23 season with one of the nation’s top backcourts.
Hunter is a near-perfect fit alongside super senior Marcus Carr. Texas fans know Carr as the player that ran the Texas team last season, but Carr is more than a capable scorer when playing much more off the ball, having averaged 19 points per game at Minnesota prior to transferring to Texas.
Hunter’s ability to handle and create, along with scoring from the point guard position, would present a terrific blend on offense. With the sport being driven at the highest level with multiple players that can play point and also score off the ball, an experienced backcourt with Hunter and Carr would be among the nation’s elite.

New Mexico State transfer Jabari Rice will play off the ball as a shooting and attacking wing with above average court vision. Rice will return to that role for Texas where he ascended at New Mexico State. Rice connected on 83 three-pointers at 37.4 percent in the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons when playing off the ball. He also connected on 46.9 percent from the field when playing on the wing.
Having Hunter and Carr will also take pressure off of freshman Arterio Morris, and allow for a smoother transition to high-major basketball. Morris enters college as a combo guard that can go get a shot, score in bunches and thrive in transition. A Texas three-guard lineup of Hunter, Carr and Morris would be among the most explosive in college basketball.
Adding one of the nation’s top point guards in Hunter, along with the additions of Morris and On3 Consensus five-star freak athlete Dillon Mitchell will allow for the Longhorns to play faster for longer stretches in 2022-23.
Hunter the player
The 6-foot-1 point guard became a household name in college basketball in the Round of 64 win over LSU. He scored 23 points to go with five steals and three assists in the upset win. He connected on a career-best seven three-pointers.
The native of Wisconsin scored in double figures in 20 of 35 games as a freshman. He also posted two games of 10 or more assists, and 17 games of five or more.
Hunter is the No. 12 ranked transfer in the On3 portal rankings for 2022.
