IT Daily Dose w/ Chris Hall – Why Texas, and everyone else, missed on Baker Mayfield

AUSTIN — Let’s just get the quote of the day out first because apparently, Texas will be running the ball and an old family reference was used to express the sentiment.

New Texas OL and run game coordinator Matt Mattox spoke of his desire to run the ball – “Our power running scheme is like Mama. When things are bad and your girlfriend breaks up with you and times are tough, what do you do? You go to mama. That will always be our base.”

You heard everything that you wanted to hear when new Texas OC/QB coach Sterlin Gilbert and new Texas OL coach and run game coordinator Mattox were given an audience at their introductory press conference.

There was expressed appreciation by Gilbert to his being a former Texas high school football coach and how much it means to him to represent high school coaches around the state. Gilbert and Mattox both referenced the huge opportunity to coach at the University of Texas. Mattox referenced that he has never coached athletes of this caliber before.

Ironically, neither really talked about the opportunity to coach and work with Charlie Strong. It was all about Texas and it being the flagship university for the state of Texas.

Under Shawn Watson and even, to an extent, Jay Norvell, there was much conversation given to competition, the best player playing and having a commitment to running the ball.

The issue became the variances between the conversation on Monday and Tuesday with the offensive coordinators and play-callers and what we saw on the field on Saturdays. The continual theme of answers were about competition and character. Gilbert even referenced talking to Art Briles when going through the process of interviewing for the Texas job saying, “I spoke with Art Briles. He was in a recruiting period and he picked up the phone every time I called. He’s a high character guy and I leaned on him.”

Mattox talked about their preparation and game-planning and stated, “We want to give them the tools and equipment they need to get an A on Saturday.”

For every Texas fan, that has to be the hope. Texas has seen their fair share of bad grades and Watson flunked his time at the University of Texas for sure.

Every fan is hoping that the combination of Gilbert and Mattox brings about the grades that could actually get into the University of Texas.

Other quotes from Sterlin Gilbert…

“We’re going to play the best guy. That’s it.”

“I’m a Texas high school football coach. It’s my job to continue building and make it better.”

“We want to give them the tools and equipment they need to get an A on Saturday.”
