UT's Xavier Worthy named finalist for Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award

True freshman Xavier Worthy was an All-Big 12 First Team selection and the Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year.

 Texas Football true freshman wide receiver Xavier Worthy has been named a finalist for the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award, the Maxwell Football Club announced on Wednesday. Worthy is the first Longhorn to be named as a finalist for the award.

Worthy had a record-shattering year for Texas, setting numerous UT freshman single-season marks, including receptions (62), receiving yards (981) and receiving touchdowns (12). He leads all FBS freshmen and the Big 12 in receiving yards, receiving yards per game (81.1) and receiving touchdowns, while leading Power 5 freshmen and ranking fifth overall among FBS freshmen in receptions and receptions per game (5.2).

On top of his single-season records, Worthy holds Texas freshman single-game records for receptions (14), receiving yards (261) and receiving touchdowns (3, twice). He had three multi-touchdown receiving games, a new freshman record, and had a stretch of four consecutive games with a touchdown reception, tied for the fifth-longest streak by any Longhorn. Additionally, his 12 total touchdowns equaled the third-most by a freshman in program history and his 72 points scored are tied for seventh all-time among Longhorn freshmen.

Worthy, the Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year, was named to the All-Big 12 First Team by the league’s coaches, the only freshman to receive first- or second-team recognition and the first Texas freshman wide receiver to earn first-team All-Big 12 honors.

The Fresno, Calif. native had four 100-yard receiving games this season, the only freshman in UT history with more than two, and a mark that is tied for sixth-most among all Longhorns in a season in program history. Worthy caught a pass in each game this season, hauling in at least six receptions in five games, and averaged 31.2 yards per touchdown catch (374 yards on 12 touchdowns).

Among Texas’ all-time ranks, Worthy’s 12 receiving touchdowns are tied for the second-best tally in a season in UT history and were the most since Jordan Shipley’s school record 13 in 2009. His 981 receiving yards were the 12th-most in a season, his 62 receptions were the 14th-most and the four 100-yard receiving games tied for the sixth-most in a season in program history. He had 261 receiving yards against Oklahoma in the Red River Showdown, the second-best single-game total ever for a Longhorn, and his 14 receptions against Kansas tied for the second-best mark in a game in Texas Football history, one shy of Shipley’s record of 15.

The Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award has been presented to the College Freshman Player of the Year since 2018 and is named in honor of Shaun Alexander, a former standout at the University of Alabama and with the Seattle Seahawks in the NFL. Past winners include; Trevor Lawrence (Clemson) – 2018, Kenneth Gainwell (Memphis) – 2019 and Will Anderson Jr. (Alabama) – 2020.

The Maxwell Foundation Club will announce the winner of the 2021 Shaun Alexander Award will be announced on Monday, January 10, 2022. The formal presentations of these awards will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala hosted by Tropicana Hotel & Casino Atlantic City on March 11, 2022.
