UTSA coach Jeff Traylor on upcoming game vs No. 21 Texas
Coaching at the University of Texas in 2015 and 2016 was a dream come true for the Texas high school football coaching legend. After stints at Arkansas and SMU, Traylor was named head coach of UTSA in December of 2019. Now, he’s coming back to Austin for a battle with the Longhorns on Saturday.
“There’s no way I’d be where I am without that place,” Traylor said. “I’d be lying if I told you I’m not grateful to that university for the opportunity they gave me. Coach (Charlie) Strong was very special to me. He’s still a dear friend of mine. He still calls me anytime he can.”
After beating a solid Army squad at West Point on Saturday, Traylor took time to breakdown the Texas-Alabama film.
“I’m not sure the best team won on that particular day on Saturday,” said Traylor. “Upon studying the film, it looks like Texas outplayed them at home in front of a great crowd. I mean, they just played Alabama, the No. 1 team in the country.”
After praising some fellow east Texas products in Demarvion Overshown and Jerrin Thompson, Traylor is full aware of the talent on the Forty Acres.
“That place (Texas) deserves to have a great team, and they’ve got them one,” Traylor said. “I can’t tell you how many players on that roster I know from the University of Texas, but I know some really well.”
When Traylor was asked if he could get four- and five-star players to San Antonio, the Roadrunners’ head coach brought the honesty.

“I might be able to get in the house to visit them,” said Traylor. “But we’re not going to get past that cup of sweet tea if we don’t have the right amount of NIL money in our establishment.”
Traylor spoke about the Longhorns’ current QB situation, where starter Quinn Ewers is expected to miss the next 4-6 weeks and backup Hudson Card is questionable this week.
“I feel for Steve (Sarkisian),” said Traylor. “I’ve gone through that. My first year here I went through four quarterbacks in my first four games.”
“Coach (Steve) Sarkisian, whichever QB he goes with, he might put Roschon (Johnson) back there,” said Traylor. “He might put Bijan (Robinson) back there. Watch out. Sark can coach now, there’s no telling what we’re going to see Saturday.”
When Traylor was asked about his Roadrunners being near two-touchdown underdogs (+10.5) to Texas on Saturday, he answered like an honest man.
“That’s it?”
