Schaefer, who was previously signed through the 2027 season, will make his regularly scheduled $2.3 million in 2025-26 and 2026-27. In 2027-28, he’ll earn $2.4 million and will see his salary increase by $100,000 each season.

His bonus structure remains the same.

Schaefer came to Texas in 2020 following eight years as head coach of Mississippi State. The Bulldogs reached the championship game of the NCAA Tournament twice under Schaefer’s leadership and won two SEC regular season titles plus the 2019 SEC Tournament title.

Currently in his fifth year at Texas, the Longhorns have reached the Elite Eight three different times, won two Big 12 tournament titles, and took home the 2023 Big 12 regular season title.

The Longhorns are currently 25-2 and 11-1 in Southeastern Conference play. Texas is on a nine-game winning streak with wins over South Carolina, Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Tennessee, and Maryland.

In his career, Schaefer is 435-206 with a 134-34 record at Texas. In addition to his stops in Austin and Starkville, Schaefer was head coach at Sam Houston from 1990-97. A graduate of Texas A&M, Schaefer spent time as an assistant at Arkansas and on Gary Blair’s national championship winning staff at Texas A&M.
