Vic Schaefer used part of his eight-day break to visit the No. 1 recruit in the nation, 2025 Lubbock (Texas) Monterrey guard Aaliyah Chavez, in a playoff game against Argyle. The superstar point guard has led her Lady Plainsmen team to a state semifinals appearance in her senior year as teams battle for her commitment.

She has been on a dominant tear, with more total points than multiple teams on their schedule, and posted her fourth straight 1000-point season on the way toward a spot on the McDonald’s All American roster.

Chavez has narrowed her commitment down to teams like Texas, Texas Tech, LSU, South Carolina, and Oklahoma, with Texas the hometown Red Raiders emerging as frontrunners.

As an elite scoring threat with a long range, Chavez could be a huge boon to the Schaefer offense. Over the last few seasons, Texas has only averaged around four three-pointers per game, with a much bigger focus on getting the ball inside and scoring in the paint. This season, players like Taylor Jones and Kyla Oladacre have dominated inside, with Madison Booker’s great attack adding to the paint point total.

But at times, the Texas offense has struggled due to the paint being too clogged. With a lack of overall outside shooting, a good interior defense can stall the Horns like South Carolina did in their first matchup.

Chavez also has the skills to attack the paint and run the offense for Schaefer, possessing a great drive and good court vision for finding shooters like Jordan Lee in the corner.

Next year, possibly playing alongside star players like Booker and Oladacre plus up and comers like Jordan Lee and Bryanna Preston, Chavez could find her footing in college without having to have an incredible season.

But until then, she’s doing fantastic things for the Monterrey Lady Plainsmen, and Schaefer had a front row seat for Chavez’s historic win
