Watson, Cal grad transfer RB, picks Texas

AUSTIN -- Texas filled a big hole with the addition of Rice grad transfer Calvin Anderson in March. Today, they got a running back to run behind him.
Cal graduate transfer running back Tre Watson has committed to Texas. The 5-foot-11, 200-pound tailback chose the Longhorns over Texas Tech and LSU. With the number of injuries the RB room in Austin has suffered since Tom Herman's arrival, it makes sense the staff would turn over every rock, hosting the former Doak Walker Award List nominee on April 20th-22nd.
Watson played in both wins over Texas (2015, 2016), and was also recruited by schools like Boise State, BYU, Washington, and Washington State.
At Cal-Berkeley, Watson toted the rock 25 times as a freshman before emerging as a sophomore with 89 carries for 504 yards and three touchdowns, along with 100 yards and a touchdown as a receiver.
In 2016, Watson ran for 709 yards, on 163 carries and four touchdowns, while also nabbing 35 catches for 241 yards and another touchdown through the air. On special teams, Watson tallied 657 career kickoff return yards.- Justin Wells
How he fits at Texas: Tre Watson was a sort of "jack of all trades" for Cal over the last few years at RB. He was never the feature back but would regularly show his wares in the receiving game or in pass protection while typically serving as the team's second back in the run game. As a pure runner he's a good athlete but doesn't stand out for his position. He was good at setting up defenders in order to get north and south in their run game but lacked the power or explosiveness to do much more than what his OL blocked for him. Texas is essentially picking up a better version of Kendall Moore, a back that can reliably execute a game plan if called upon but isn't a guy that's going to carry the offense. - Ian Boyd Watson is the second graduate transfer to choose Texas for its 2018 season along with Calvin Anderson (Rice).
