Cunningham sees strong parallels between his high school team’s journey and what Steve Sarkisian is building at Texas. Both programs have faced doubters, tough opponents, and moments of adversity but have pushed through to establish themselves as contenders. Cunningham noted how Texas had to rebuild and overcome significant hurdles, much like North Crowley, and he’s excited to join a team that’s proving they can rise to the occasion and “win it all.”
A significant factor in Cunningham’s confidence about transitioning to Texas is his connection to High School Relations Director Jahmal Fenner. Fenner and Cunningham’s high school coach share a close bond from their semi-pro playing days, giving Cunningham added reassurance that Texas values hard work, development, and earned success.
Motivated to silence critics who have questioned his size and ability to play linebacker at the next level, Cunningham is focused on attacking the weight room, building strength, and competing with the best. He’s determined to prove he belongs in the Longhorns’ lineup, showcasing the grit and resilience Texas is counting on to secure its future success. With his underdog mindset and championship pedigree, Cunningham is ready to thrive in Austin.

Jonathan Cunningham Evaluation
Cunningham is an athletic linebacker who has defensive back covering abilities. He was being recruited by a number or schools at safety, so that speaks to his athleticism. Cunningham can fit in the same role as Texas’ Morice Blackwell, playing in space, covering tight ends and slot receivers. At almost 200 pounds, Cunningham will have to gain weight, but he shows a of physicality and toughness when coming up to make the tackle or take on pulling offensive lineman.
