The Texas Longhorns announced a number of staff promotions and new titles in recent weeks, with names like Duane Akina, Mark Orphey, and Chad Scott garnering most of the attention. But one of the promotions kept an up-and-coming staff member in Austin despite overtures from other schools.

Mike Bimonte, a former Rutgers walk-on quarterback who was part of Kyle Flood‘s Scarlet Knights program from 2011-2014, was recently promoted from senior football analyst to co-passing game coordinator and assistant quarterbacks coach.

And according to Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian, other teams wanted Bimonte to be in their building.

“We’ve got some analysts that have stayed on board and didn’t want to lose,” Sarkisian said. “I didn’t want to lose Mike Bimonte, who had some real opportunities.”

Bimonte has been with the program since February of 2021, according to his LinkedIn page.

Bimonte was with Flood at Rutgers and saw playing time as the Scarlet Knights’ field goal holder during the 2014 season. After the Manalapan, N.J. product completed his playing career and earned his B.S. in Exercise Science and Sports Studies, he earned a Master’s degree in Corporate and Public Communication from Monmouth University.

His football experience helped him earn a role at Delaware, where he was quarterbacks coach during the 2016 season. From there, he joined Forescout Technologies, a company that operates in the cybersecurity world, and remained with them until joining the Longhorns in 2021 after Sarkisian and Flood ventured from Tuscaloosa to Austin. His role has evolved, as he has worked with other positions, but quarterbacks are his current focus.

During practice, Bimonte spends nearly every moment with the Longhorn signal-callers. When Sarkisian tends to other parts of his football team, Bimonte and AJ Milwee are there developing the position Sark believes is the most important in sports. He’s not just working with players like Quinn Ewers and Arch Manning, but also players lower on the depth chart like Trey Owens and KJ Lacey.

Former Texas quarterback Charles Wright worked with Bimonte during his time at Texas from 2021 to 2023 and knows first-hand the value the former Rutgers quarterback brings to the room.

“I can’t say enough good things about Coach Bimonte,” Wright told Inside Texas. “When I was at Texas, he was working with the tight ends but his role spread beyond just the tight end room. He’s a persistent motivator, understands Coach Sark’s offensive and team philosophy, and does a great job inputting his perspective in game-planning and defensive breakdowns.

“Whenever you can have a former quarterback provide his unique perspective and tools to an offense and quarterback room as a coach, it’s extremely impactful. That’s why Coach Sark, Coach Milwee, and Coach Bimonte have had such great success with the quarterback room, on offense, and ultimately as a team. He’s going to continue to thrive at Texas.”

Bimonte typically is in the coaches box on gamedays, providing an eye in the sky for Sarkisian and Milwee on the ground. He’s also part of the quarterback recruiting process, helping that duo maintain contact with talented signal-callers around the country even if he can’t go out on the road and recruit due to NCAA restrictions.

The coaching journey may be just starting for Bimonte, but it’s a journey Texas wanted to ensure took an extended stay in Austin before it ventured elsewhere. As a result, he can put a new title on his business card that says assistant quarterbacks coach and co-passing game coordinator for the Texas Longhorns.
