After South Carolina’s destruction of Texas A&M in Columbia, S.C., there are no longer any teams in the Southeastern Conference with an unblemished league record. The Aggies are one of five teams that now have just one conference loss and as a result remain in contention for making the SEC Championship Game.

Three of those five teams played on Saturday.

Georgia defeated Florida, 34-20, in Jacksonville, Fla.

Not only did the Gators lose the game, they might have also lost another quarterback for an extended stretch. DJ Lagway left with what Florida head coach Billy Napier called a “pretty significant” hamstring injury per Gators Online. Texas welcomes the Gators this weekend. Georgia is now 7-1 overall and 5-1 in SEC play. Florida is 4-4 overall and 2-3 in SEC play.

Tennessee defeated Kentucky, 28-18, in Knoxville, Tenn.

This game could have looked a lot different as Volunteer kicker Max Gilbert missed three field goal attempts that would have made this a three-score game. Kentucky falls to 3-6 and 1-6 in SEC play. Tennessee improved to 7-1 and 4-1 in the SEC.

South Carolina defeated Texas A&M, 44-20, in Columbia, S.C.

The Gamecocks rushed for almost 300 yards as Rocket Sanders totaled 144 yards and two rushing touchdowns, while LaNorris Sellers had 106 yards and a score of his own. The Aggies were shut out in the second half and saw the Gamecock student section, a.k.a. the Cockpit, storm the field. Texas A&M is now 7-2 overall and 5-1 in SEC play. South Carolina is 5-3 overall and 3-3 in conference.

Texas and LSU were on bye.

With that data, let’s look at the top of the SEC standings.

  2. Texas A&M (5-1 SEC)
  3. Tennessee (4-1 SEC)
  4. LSU (3-1 SEC)

These teams are College Football Playoff contenders, too

Every single one of these teams will be within the first College Football Playoff rankings on Tuesday when the CFP selection committee starts one of the silliest parts of the college football season. At this juncture, any team with two or fewer losses is a contender.

All of the above teams were in the top 16 of the most recent AP Poll. They’ll likely be in the top 16 again on Tuesday when the rankings come out.

There’s no current quota for teams from one league, and as many as four from the SEC could make the 12 team field.
