Williams crosses TX-LA border, picks Texas

AUSTIN — It seems the Longhorns dip into Louisiana a few times a cycle to grab some under-the-radar prospects. Mike Williams is no exception.
The 3-star athlete from Dunham School (Baton Rouge, LA) committed to Texas today over offers from Arkansas, Tennessee, Ole Miss, and Mississippi State among others. The 6-foot-3, 240-pounder played QB in high school and will move to the defensive side of the ball in college.
How he fits at Texas: Williams is the QB you create as a joke on Madden that looks like a linemen but has been boosted on speed and agility so that he moves like a running back. Seriously, he looks like someone gave Jalen Hurts the Captain America serum. He could probably do just about anything on the football field he wants in terms of positions aligned in the box. As a HS QB he shows a lot of agility and also tremendous vision, so he might should start at B-backer and then he can always spin down if he/when ends up at 270 or so. Texas should also sneak him a look at TE if they get him on campus. – Ian Boyd
Coach says: Searched far and wide to find any tape of this player playing defense and only found two plays. Very hard to make an assessment. Strengths – A thickly built athlete with good straight line speed for his size. Great lower body build with strong base. Has above average agility for a man this size. In limited film, blew right past the tackle for immediate pressure in the backfield. Areas for Improvement/Concern – Limited playing time and film at position other than QB. His frame may not reasonably support another 20 pounds in proper fashion.

How this affects Texas: Texas needs at least one DE, if not two to round out 2018’s squad. They’re looking under every rock for a defensive end with upside and potential. Louisiana is always a great place to look. Meet Mike Williams, the Cajun version of Vernon Jackson. He’s a take on athletic ability and size alone. UT views him on the d-line, but just get him on campus and figure out the rest. He’ll take an official visit to Texas in mid-January. Then it gets real. – Justin Wells
